GlaxoSmithKline are one of the world’s most innovative, best performing and trusted science-led healthcare companies with a focus on helping people to do more, feel better and live longer. As important as their products, the pharmaceutical company invests significantly in their employees, encouraging them to be the best they can be and take great care of their environmental health and safety as well as that of their colleagues.
In order to promote this ethos GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) hold an annual Environment Health and Safety Day across the company. In June 2018 the competition was held at one of their two Scottish sites, Montrose, and opened to all staff. In a credit to the company and the culture created at GlaxoSmithKline, everyone involved in the competitions were volunteers, coming from different areas of the company such a quality, technical, operations to engineering, strategy, logistics and administration. Each dedicating their own time in the lead up to the competition to improve and hone their skills, completing nearly 80,000 hours of training between them.
The Environment Health and Safety Day saw 150 staff from GlaxoSmithKline ’s sites and offices across the UK, Ireland and Belgium taking part in Fire, Emergency Response, First Aid and Risk Assessment competitions. Each of the competitions were watched by around 200 senior leaders, encouraging their competition teams to perform their best against the clock in a test of their competency, skills and knowledge in emergency situations and real-life scenarios.
